AI in Recruitment: Why Human Connection Still Matters

Artificial Intelligence is changing the way organisations recruit, extending beyond resume screening to interviewing candidates and supporting hiring decisions.

While AI can significantly reduce hiring times and improve consistency, some jobseekers remain concerned about the lack of human interaction during the recruitment process. Australian copywriter Erin Arnett recently shared her experience of being interviewed by a chatbot, describing the process as “jarring” and noting that AI interviews can limit a candidate’s ability to clarify responses or build rapport.

According to AI Build CEO and Melbourne University lecturer Yifei Wang, AI can help remove inconsistencies and unconscious bias by assessing candidates against the same criteria. He believes AI should be viewed as a tool that supports recruitment rather than something to fear.

However, psychologist and Sublime Studio founder Byron McCaughey highlights the importance of maintaining human involvement in recruitment. Beyond assessing skills and experience, recruitment is also about cultural fit, values, and ensuring both the employer and candidate are right for each other.

As AI continues to play a larger role in hiring, jobseekers are encouraged to approach AI interviews as they would any other interview: communicate clearly, provide specific examples, use relevant keywords, and remain authentic.

The future of recruitment is likely to be a balance between technology and human judgement, combining efficiency with the personal connection that remains essential to successful hiring.
