5 Workplace Trends to Watch in 2026

With 2026 underway, many professionals across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region are considering what changes the year will bring to workplaces and careers. Last year brought shifts in technology, pay, skills demands and flexibility — trends that look set to continue in 2026, offering both challenges and opportunities.

Here are five workplace trends experts predict will shape careers and what you can do to stay ahead, according to the SEEK content team:

1. Use of AI Will Increase

AI is now widely used in recruitment: employers rely on it to write job descriptions (76%), screen resumés (72%) and schedule interviews (71%). Candidates are also using AI tools for resumés (25%), cover letters (25%) and interview prep (12%).

While AI is useful, it isn’t perfect. Tailor applications and use your own voice to stand out. As Kristine Tuazon, Principal Consultant at Good People HR, says: “Hiring managers might be wondering if they’re speaking with a real person or reading an AI-generated resumé.”

2. Visibility Is More Important Than Ever

With record application volumes, being discoverable is key. Keep your SEEK Profile up to date with detailed work experience, skills and qualifications.

SEEK’s Show Strong Interest feature lets employers know you’re genuinely interested. To use it, log into your SEEK Profile and turn on Show Strong Interest during the review step before applying, or add it later through the Applied Jobs tab. You’ll need a verified SEEK Pass to access this for up to three applications per month.

3. Power Skills Are in High Demand

Beyond technical skills, employers increasingly value power skills: communication, adaptability, teamwork, creativity and emotional intelligence. Tuazon notes: “Having a combination of technical skills plus power skills is what’s going to help you in 2026 — especially as AI changes the way we work.”

Strengthen these skills to prepare for future roles across Australia and Asia-Pacific.

4. Non-Traditional Career Paths Are Being Embraced

Fewer professionals follow a linear career path today. Changing fields, upskilling independently, or pursuing side projects is now accepted — and even welcomed — by employers.

Career coach Leah Lambart of Relaunch Me says: “It doesn’t matter whether your career is linear or non-linear. What’s important is being intentional: map your skills and plan your next steps.”

5. Benefits Are the New Salary

Many workers now prioritise work-life balance and flexibility over pay. SEEK’s Money Matters Report shows 65% of Australians would choose balance over higher pay, and one in four remote workers wouldn’t return to the office full-time, regardless of a pay rise.

Kylie Pascoe of SEEK notes: “Perks such as extra leave, reduced hours, or flexible arrangements make a real difference to day-to-day satisfaction and retention.”

In 2026, adapting to new technology, strengthening power skills, increasing visibility, and embracing flexible career paths will give you the edge in Australia and across the Asia-Pacific region.

Independent research conducted by Nature on behalf of SEEK, interviewing 12,000 Australians annually (published November 2025). Money Matters Report research conducted February–June 2025 via an online survey of 3,000+ working Australians aged 18–64.
